Many commercial mouthwashes contain ethanol (alcohol), sometimes as much as 20–27%. On Dr. Karen’s list, alcohol mouth washes are at fifth position.
A 2024 study found that daily use of an alcohol‑based mouthwash for three months significantly altered the oral microbiome: it increased levels of certain opportunistic bacteria which, according to authors, are “previously reported to be enriched in periodontal disease, oesophageal and colorectal cancer.”
